Kingston Reads presents: A Community Conversation about Race, Healthcare, and Healing

Communities of color have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19.  But this crisis is calling out for us to pay attention to the long-standing inequities in our health care system.  It is also an opportunity for us ask how we can come together as a community and heal. Please join us for our January conversation (via Zoom) when moderators Shaniqua Bowden, Erica Brown, and Charlotte Adamis will be joined by guests Dara Lurie and Marsha Sebro to talk about the intersection of race, healthcare, and healing.

Registration will open January 7 at kingstonreads.org. The recommended books for our January discussion — My Grandmother’s Hands, Killing the Black Body; and Dying of Whiteness, are on sale now at Rough Draft for 10% off during the month of January.

Kingston Reads is a volunteer initiative that encourages all members of our community to read, listen, or watch and then gather (virtually) for discussions about race and racial justice.  By coming together as a community, we can raise the level of awareness, engage each other in honest and challenging conversations, and, critically, take the next step: commit to dismantling racism.

We have switched things up a bit since our last iteration, which was perhaps more “book club” oriented. Our intention going forward is to hold a community conversation on the third Thursday of each month starting in January, and many of our conversations will be thematic.

Because we want to make Kingston Reads as accessible to as many folks as possible, there is no “requirement” for participation in the conversations other than to be present with an open heart and mind.  That being said, each month we will have suggested books, short articles, podcasts, and videos that relate to the topic and support the different time options that you may have (or the modes of engagement that you may prefer).
